The East Branch of Cuyahoga River Covered Bridge carries the Maple Highlands Trail over the East Branch of Cuyahoga River near Burton Station, Ohio.
The Maple Highlands Trail utilizes the alignment of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad through the county. 1 After the railroad abandoned the alignment in 1976, the Geauga Park District expressed interest in converting the right-of-way into a multi-use trail. In 1986, the county and park district moved forward on those plans, backed with funding from the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act. Construction of the trail, at 20 miles 2 was completed in 2014. 1
Planning on the bridge began in November 2011 with the signing of a design and engineering contract with Smolen Engineering of Jefferson. 2 Concepts were unveiled in January 2012 and construction began in April 2012. The covered Pratt through truss was erected by the Park District’s construction crew off-site, lifted in-place by All Crane of Pittsburgh, and finished in mid-August 2013 at a cost of $180,000.
