Constructed in 1881 by the Massillon Bridge Company of Massillon, Ohio, the Whipple through truss was rehabilitated in 2011 and 2012.1 Rehabilitation work included repairing the superstructure, installing a new 3″ × 4″ timber strip deck and asphalt chip-seal surface, the placement of new wood guardrails and re-mortaring the masonry abutments.

The rehabilitated Mill Road Bridge is part of Ohio Bicycle Route 36 (Ohio and Indiana Trail) on the former Richmond and Covington Railroad/Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad/Pennsylvania Railroad/New York Central/Penn Central/Conrail, a line that was abandoned in 1983.
