The Tare Covered Bridge carries the Maple Highlands Trail over Tare Creek near Burton Station, Ohio.
The trail utilizes the alignment of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad through the county. 1 After the railroad abandoned the alignment in 1976, the Geauga Park District expressed interest in converting the right-of-way into a multi-use trail. In 1986, the county and park district moved forward on those plans, backed with funding from the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act. Construction of the trail, at 20 miles, 2 was completed in 2014. 1
Planning on the bridge began with the signing of a design and engineering contract with Smolen Engineering of Jefferson. The covered Howe through truss 3 was erected by the Park District’s construction crew off-site, lifted in-place, and finished in 2004.
