About Scottown Covered Bridge
Constructed in 1874 2 by William Thompson for only $547, the multiple Kingpost-truss span was originally known as the Red Covered Bridge, named for its red tin roof. The single-span rested on wide stone abutments. In 1934, iron rods were added to the span for added strength.
In 1971, the tin roof was replaced, which was followed by an extensive renovation in 1991 that involved the replacement of the floor, floor spats, siding, and roof. The renovations cost $33,000. 1 In the early 2000s, the covered bridge was closed to vehicular traffic.
