The Hayes Covered Bridge, a Kingpost truss bridge, spans Buffalo Creek along Hoover Road in Union County, Pennsylvania. Built in 1882, it underwent repairs in 1957–1958 2 under the supervision of engineer Sidney R. Collins. 1 Additional repairs were made in 1968, and the bridge was painted in the 1980s. 5

In 1988, rumors spread that the county planned to remove the bridge due to its condition. 5 In response, historians and covered bridge enthusiasts urged county commissioners to preserve it, as it was one of only five covered bridges remaining in the county. 3 Although removal was never considered, the county installed barriers at both entrances to restrict vehicles taller than 6 feet 6 inches. This measure prevented trucks from crossing while still allowing passenger cars and horse-drawn buggies. A bypass was also constructed for heavier vehicles. 3 5

By 1991, structural damage from vehicle strikes and rotting timbers led to the bridge’s closure. 3 The county allocated $22,000 from its liquid fuels tax fund for repairs, including new timbers, with work completed mid-year.

In 2007, a state Department of Transportation inspection rated the bridge’s sufficiency at zero. 4 This rating indicated eligibility for replacement but did not assess its ability to support traffic. With only 150 vehicles using the road daily and the bridge’s structural condition deemed fair, it was still considered safe for the level of traffic it received.
