The Red Bridge, a Pratt through truss structure built in 1896 by the King Bridge Company, once carried State Route 1005 (Devil’s Hollow Road) over Benson Creek in Franklin County, Kentucky. 1 It was bypassed in 1980 by a new two-lane bridge.
The bridge was listed for disposition in May 1992. 2 The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), and the State Historic Preservation Officer sought to find an individual or organization willing to assume ownership. While the FHWA and KYTC offered to cover the cost of dismantling the structure, they would not fund site preparation or reassembly.
The adjoining property owner, Irvin C. Moore, was initially to assume responsibility for maintaining the old bridge. 1 However, Moore withdrew after determining that the bridge could not support heavy farm equipment.
