The Norfolk & Western Railroad (N&W) Ohio Extension along Twelvepole Creek was part of the original alignment of the N&W between Lenore, West Virginia, and Ohio. It was replaced by the 59-mile Big Sandy Low-Grade Line through Mingo and Wayne counties and much of the original Ohio Extension was dismantled in 1933. Much of it was converted for automobile use and includes several tunnels and many bridges.
