The pin-connected Pratt through truss was constructed in 1888 by the Motherwell Iron & Steel Company of Logan, Ohio, 1 along Klump Road over Rush Creek. 2
The Motherwell Iron & Steel Company was established in Lancaster in 1867 by the three Motherwell brothers, James, Robert, and William. 2 Initially, it produced shovels and scrapers under the name Motherwell Brothers. The company was enlarged in 1874 and became the Motherwell Iron Works. It expanded again by 1881, reorganizing as the Motherwell Iron & Steel Company, with L.A. Culver serving as President. New shops were erected, and in 1882, additional buildings were constructed near the Columbus Hocking Valley & Toledo Railway, including a machine shop, engine house, foundry, warehouse, and office building. The company produced agricultural implements and iron building materials for courthouses and jails.
The Motherwell Iron & Steel Company went into receivership in 1892 5 and was sold to R. C. and C. P. Caughey of Sewickley and Holman Bros. of Alleghena, Pennsylvania. 6 The company was dissolved in 1897, and the factory was abandoned by 1900. 7
The Klump Road bridge was rehabilitated in 1956 with a new steel deck and concrete repairs to the sandstone abutments. 3 In 2008, the bridge was reconstructed for a trail over Oldtown Creek at Old Town Creek Preserve. 1 The 120-year-old steel truss bridge, the county’s last remaining active steel truss, had been moved to the highway garage, refurbished, and reassembled by county crews. 4 The Hocking County Engineer’s Office received an award from the Federal Highway Administration, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and the Ohio Historic Preservation Office for its outstanding efforts in rehabilitating the bridge.
