Hutchinson was established in 1910 as a company town for the Hutchinson Coal Mine, which was operated by the Hutchinson Coal Company on the opposite side of the West Fork River. 1 The mine remained in operation until 1921.

To move coal from the mine to the railroad, a riveted Warren through truss bridge was built across the river. 1 The bridge originally carried two levels of traffic: pedestrians and automobiles used the lower deck, while coal cars crossed on rails mounted along the top of the truss system.

In April 2024, bids were approved for a replacement Hutchinson Bridge, with Kokosing Construction Company submitting the low bid of $5.98 million. 2 Work began that summer, with construction expected to be completed by October 2026.
