History
The Wheeling Creek Trestle carried the Adena Branch of the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway over Wheeling Creek and Jug Run Road in Belmont County, Ohio. It was completed in 1904 for the Adena Railroad, which had been organized to connect the coal fields of Harrison and Belmont counties to larger railroads. 1
The Adena Railroad was merged into the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway, its former competitor, in 1916, after which the route was operated as the W&LE’s Adena Branch. 2 The branch remained in service until 1993, when the Saginaw Mine south of St. Clairsville closed. With its principal remaining customer gone, the Adena Branch was abandoned soon afterward.
