Initially, the crossing featured an aqueduct over Dry Fork Creek, with a separate trestle for the towpath. 2
The Cincinnati & Indiana Railroad (C&I) was incorporated in April 1861 as a subsidiary of the Indianapolis & Cincinnati Railroad (I&C) to build a rail line from Cincinnati to the Indiana state line. 1 The C&I acquired the Cincinnati & Whitewater Canal right-of-way for its railroad and built a new bridge over Dry Fork Creek. In 1900, the Cincinnati, Lawrenceburg & Aurora Electric Street Railroad’s (CL&A) Harrison Branch was constructed atop the canal aqueduct piers and abutments, which dated to the early 1840s. 2 3 Kilby Road was also built on the same piers and abutments.
In June 1889, the I&C merged into the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway (Big Four), becoming its Chicago Division. 1 The Big Four was acquired by the New York Central Railroad in 1906.
In 1927, the CL&A branch was abandoned, 3 and Kilby Road was widened to occupy the former interurban right-of-way.
The Big Four operated independently until 1930. 1 In 1969, the New York Central merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad to form Penn Central. In 1979, the Indiana & Ohio Railway (I&O) took over freight operations from Brookville to Valley Junction, now part of its Brookville Subdivision.
